Comparing times at different courses, on different days:

  • Berkley just moved their course to Norup Middle School. We have never run there.

  • The Possum Hollow course at Kensington is the most difficult that we run on. It has the highest hill, and as the Farmington High cross country coaches tell us, it does not give the same energy return on each stride. It is just slower. Expect times there to reflect this.

  • Officially, DCD has a shorter course. Their official announced distance is 1.89 miles.

  • We have not run at East in a long time, so we do not have a sense of their course. Warner's is very tight and can be congested.

Scoring:

A team gets points based on the finish position of its first five runners. First place is one point, third place is three points, etc. Low score wins. A perfect cross country score (one team finishing 1-5) is 15 points. 6th and 7th runners do not score, but they can help push back the other team's scoring five.

Example: Team Blue finishes 2,3,6,8,9 for 28 points and Team Red's first four finish 1,4,5,7. Red has 17 points (so far). But THEN: the Blue 6th and 7th runners come in at 10 and 11. The last runner of the scoring five for Team Red is pushed back to 12. So Team Red's total is 29 points. Blue wins the race.

Notes:

  • Girls will run first in every race this year (it alternates).

  • New rule in 2016: 6th graders are full members of the team (previously, their running was called an "exhibition event"). 6th graders will run in the races and count in the scoring. This also means that 6th-grade runners could run in the "Top 7" races held at the County Meet and the League Meet.

  • All runners will get a chance to participate at the South Division Meet on October 19. This meet will be the last meet of the season for runners in the Open category.

  • At the League Meet, to be held October 24, only the top seven boys and girls from each school will run. We would prefer something different, but the North Division schools will also be present, and the Cranbrook course is too tight for so many runners. Everyone is welcome to come and watch.

  • There will be no practice on Friday, September 22 or Wednesday, October 18 due to student half days. There will be no practice on Friday, October 20 since the last meet for most runners will be October 19. Top seven girls and boys who will run at the League Meet WILL have practice on Monday, October 23.

  • We will have a pizza party to end the season. Date to be announced.
